A man has been arrested after a major street in Melbourne’s CBD was shut down by police.
Emergency services responded to reports of a man in possession of petrol cans and hazardous materials “behaving erratically” at a William Street building before 8am on Tuesday.
William Street, Melbourne is blocked in both directions between Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street due to a police incident. Use King Street or Spencer Street instead. Route 58 trams are diverting around the closure. Check the PTV app for disruption information. #victrafficpic.twitter.com/FB7ORqTEuA

Police locked down the surrounding area and negotiated with the man, who was subsequently arrested.
The man was taken to hospital for observation under police guard.
Police have advised the scene has since been declared safe and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
