Morrison has blamed the courts for the Murugappan asylum seeker family being stranded in Perth on uncertain visa status.
The Tamil family of four has been granted three temporary visas which has allowed them to stay in detention in Perth rather than on Christmas Island, but one of the family’s Australian-born daughters has not been granted a visa.
This has left the family unable to return to the town they had been living in, Biloela in Queensland, before the Australian Border Force took them into custody in March 2018.
“The matter is still not determined in the courts,” Morrison said.
“There is no protection owed. They have not been found to be refugees.”
Morrison said he would let Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, who was present at the same press conference, address the issue, but cut the media short soon after without Hawke having spoken.
