Victorian pandemic bill passes through parliament

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has secured controversial new powers after a pandemic management bill passed the upper house following lengthy debate and protests.

Critics of the bill include the Opposition – with some MPs vowing to repeal it if elected next year.

The bill means pandemic powers will transfer from Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton to Premier Andrews and state Health Minister Martin Foley.

The laws will come into effect from December 16.
