Sharon and Ankur have had a brutal introduction to The Block, with judge Shaynna Blaze in particular not mincing her words when judging the pair’s dark toned bathroom.
Shaynna said the bathroom paid no heed to the home’s late 1800s heritage and generally acted as if Sharon and Ankur had left a fresh turd in the toilet.
But they’ve had a win this week, taking out the first Block 2022 challenge.
Their skills as a lawyer/actor (Sharon) and accountant (Ankur) have finally come in handy when they ask the right questions and memorise the right answers in a game involving the contestants visiting schmick local properties and meeting the owners.
They take home $5000 and a bonus point.
It’s given Sharon a bit of her mojo back. Enough mojo for her to start slinging a few barbs at Shaynna as she goes antique shopping for her guest bedroom.
“There were two things in that bathroom from the 1890s, but Shaynna, who claims to love antiques, didn’t recognise either of them,” Sharon says.
“I think this time I’ll write a note with a big arrow that says ‘Shaynna, this is an antique’.”
Speaking of antiques, the contestants and their landscapers are all given an important archaeology lesson by local Indigenous elder Ron and archaeologist Annette this week. Indigenous stone tools have been found on the site, and contestants need to recognise and protect the likes of stone cutting tools if they find them during their build.
“It’s part of Australian history that none of us knew about,” Tom admits.
“None of us have been taught enough about it in school.”
The other contestants are happy for Sharon and Ankur in the wake of their challenge win, with Jenny noting “they deserve a win” and Sarah-Jane saying “she needed that bit of a morale boost so I’m happy for them”.
Not happy enough not to play hardball with securing a real estate agent though.
Sarah-Jane and Tom meet one sought-after agent at the challenge and sneak off during a contestants’ dinner to pin him down while pretending they’re calling their daughter.
Soon other contestants follow suit, until hapless Sharon and Ankur are the only pair who haven’t locked an agent in.
“We’re dumb dumbs,” Sharon laments, noting that Sarah-Jane and Tom’s secret move to snatch the agent out from them “hurts”.
“But it’s a competition, and they were on the front foot,” Ankur admits.
Still, Sharon does have a small but important victory during the building of their guest room. When a roomful of tradies, Keith and Dan and Ankur stand around puzzling how to fix the fact their skylights can’t be perfectly centred due to some annoyingly placed beams Sharon suggests they just move the wall 150mm.
The blokes in the room are struck dumb by the elegant simplicity of her solution.
It’s a real “why can’t we have both” moment and she’s understandably chuffed at herself.
