Mariupol Evacuees Arrive in Zaporizhzhia, Officials Say

Cvilians evacuated on Wednesday, April 20, from the besieged city of Mariupol in south Ukraine arrived in the Zaporizhzhia on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said. The Mariupol City Council said the buses shown in this footage transported 79 residents of the city to safety. On Wednesday, Mariupol officials said an organized evacuation did not go as planned, with only a limited number of buses able to reach evacuees. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk blamed Russia for the failed operation, citing a failure to control “their own military on the ground.” Vereshchuk said four buses managed to leave the city carrying “women, children and elderly people.” On Thursday, Vereshchuk called for a humanitarian corridor to allow the evacuation of 1,000 civilians and 500 wounded soldiers from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, where the last of Ukrainian forces in the city were continuing to hold out against Russian forces.
