It has been a little over a week since Will Smith smacked Chris Rock for making a joke about her alopecia at the Oscars.
Since then, Will Smith has publicly apologized for his actions and in addition to this, the 53-year-old actor has resigned from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness”, Will said in a statement.
In his statement, Will expressed deep regret and reiterated that his behaviour was out of line and “unacceptable”. He also notes that hearing a joke about his wife’s medical condition rubbed him the wrong way and caused him to react emotionally.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally”, Will said.
In conversation with US Weekly, a source revealed that Jada Pinkett Smith is not angry with Will Smith coming to her defence, but she does, however, wish that Will Smith did not get physical with Chris Rock.
The source also revealed that the couple both agree that Will overreacted.
“It was in the heat of the moment and it was him overreacting. He knows that she knows that. They’re in agreement that he overreacted.”
