Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has finally succumbed to pressure and recalled Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane back to the national team.
The Belgian manager announced his 23-man squad to face Botswana and Sierra Leone in two friendly internationals later this month.
Broos came rcently under heavy criticism as his side participated in the FIFA World Cup and CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers after snubbing Zwane and Andile Jali.
As he named his squad at Nasrec, in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon, the experienced coach humbled himself and praised the man called ‘Mshishi.
He said ‘only fools don’t change their minds’, suggesting that he has noted the Masandawana midfielder’s quality.
“Only fools don’t change their minds, I said a lot of things about him,” said Bafana coach Broos on Zwane.
“He is an intelligent player, he is good and he is doing great performances for his team, we have to give him a chance.”
The likes of Percy Tau, Evidence Makgopa, and Keagan Dolly are some of the notable absentees in the squad with Kaizer Chiefs only having one representative in Kgaogelo Sekgota.
Social media users and football fans also weighed in on the selection and some feel the reigning DStv Premiership champions cannot complain as they dominate the selection.
@Khumbudzo Munyai said:
“Mamelodi Sundowns people should not complain this time. This squad list is all Sundowns and at least based on merit.”
@Patrick Mhlaba said:
“At least Kaizer Chiefs is represented by the right person deserving a national call-up!!”
@Kingsley Makoro commented:
“A bunch of average players is all I see but hey we are South Africa…We got a street footballing culture…Nothing more to expect.”
Bafana will entertain the Leone Stars on Saturday, 24 September (14:30), before taking on neighbours, the Zebras, on Tuesday, 27 September (17:30). Both fixtures will be played at FNB Stadium.
