Global COVID cases surpass 400 million

Global COVID-19 cases have surpassed 400 million as the highly contagious Omicron variant dominates the outbreak.

The new strain accounts for almost all new cases reported daily, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections are declining in many countries but around two million cases are still being registered daily.

Deaths have increased by 70 per cent in the last five weeks, based on the seven-day average.

The pandemic has killed over 6 million people worldwide.
